Choose Your Attitude

August 02, 20244 min read

"You can't control everything, but you always get to choose your attitude. Choose wisely, because it shapes your day and those around you." – Nichole Banks

Introduction:

Ever noticed how a bad attitude can spread faster than a viral video? This morning, I found myself caught in a mini-drama at my favorite coffee stand. Picture this: a frazzled customer unleashing her frustration on a barista just doing her job. It got me thinking about how often we let our attitudes dictate our day. We all have the power to choose our perspective, and how we react can make all the difference.

In this post, I’m diving into the art of choosing positivity, even in the face of life’s little irritations. Ready to turn those moments of frustration into opportunities for growth? Let’s explore how a simple shift in attitude can transform your day and your interactions with others.

Gawd, overhearing someone complain about the littlest of things has officially become one of my biggest pet peeves.

This morning at Dutch Bro’s, I witnessed a full-on Cranky-Monster meltdown. She was in such a hurry that she started yelling at the mom in front of her, simply because the poor woman asked a question about hot cocoa for her child. I heard Cranky-Monster mutter, “This is a coffee stand! Why are you even bringing your child in here!??”

But here’s the best part: the Dutch Bro’s employee handled it like a pro. She kept her sweet, calm composure with the mom, and when Cranky-Monster made it to the window? Still sweet and nice, not missing a beat.

Now, Dutch Bro’s has a pretty strict customer care code for their employees to follow, but it’s also a choice that Barista made to stick to it and stay cool. And that got me thinking…

We all have a choice.

I could have easily chimed in with Cranky-Monster’s bad attitude, but I chose to be patient instead. And here’s where the magic happens: when we choose how to behave, we influence everyone around us.

Would it have helped the Barista if I joined in the cranky fest? Absolutely not. But did my calmness help the situation? Maybe. And what did that child learn from it all? A big YES to better behavior.

I’ve been working on this a lot myself. I’m always a work in progress, so take yesterday for example. I stubbed my toe—again—on the staircase spindle. In the past, I might’ve let out a string of curse words loud enough to wake the neighborhood. But this time? I calmly said, “Dammmm!!! That hurt,” hummed a few more under my breath, took a deep breath, and moved on.

But it’s not just about those small moments. We make choices every day that impact our lives. I know I shouldn’t eat popcorn (ugh, pancreas issues), but I do it anyway because, honestly, who doesn’t love popcorn?

We all make choices every single day: to have a good day or a bad day, to make a good decision or a bad one, to rock a good attitude or a not-so-great one.

It’s your choice.

Yes, it takes practice. I get it. That bad angel sitting on your shoulder can be loud. But here’s your call to action: Practice choosing a good attitude, no matter what life throws at you. Over time, it’ll feel so much better.

After placing my order with the Barista, I walked away with my head held high. I chose a good attitude, and I’ve got to say, it felt like a small victory.

Small victories, baby! Small victories.
