Lonely, Lost, and Low-Key Livid: The Emotions No One Warns You About After Divorce

January 16, 20265 min read

“You can be strong, capable, and still feel lonely, lost, and low-key livid. That doesn’t mean you’re failing—it means you’re healing.”— Nichole Banks

Lonely, Lost, and Low-Key Livid: The Emotions No One Warns You About After Divorce

Healing after divorce is not all bubble baths and journaling under fairy lights.

Sometimes it’s crying in the car at 10 a.m.
Sometimes it’s staring at your reflection and thinking, Who is this woman?
Sometimes it’s feeling lonely, lost, and just angry enough to scare yourself a little.

And if no one has said it yet — I see you.

Because here’s the truth most women don’t say out loud:
Divorce doesn’t just break your heart.
It rearranges your emotional wiring.

You can be strong and sad.
Capable and confused.
Healing and hurting.

These things are not contradictions.
They’re the human experience.

So let’s talk about the Three L’s — the ones almost every divorced woman feels but rarely names.

L #1: Lonely

Loneliness after divorce isn’t just about sleeping alone.

It’s the empty seat at dinner.
The text thread that goes quiet.
The inside jokes that no longer belong to anyone.

It’s being in a room full of people and still feeling like you’re made of glass — visible, but untouched.

I remember sitting in a crowded restaurant, watching couples share fries and laugh, while I pushed food around my plate like it had personally offended me. I wasn’t hungry.

I was hollow.

That kind of loneliness whispers lies:

  • You’re not lovable

  • You’re too much

  • You’ll always be alone

But loneliness isn’t a life sentence.
It’s a pause.

And sometimes the smallest connections matter most:

  • A friend texting “thinking of you”

  • A podcast that makes you laugh-snort in traffic

  • A dog resting their head on your lap

You are not as alone as you feel — even when it feels unbearable.

L #2: Lost

There’s a moment after divorce where you look around and think,
Whose life is this?

Your routines are gone.
Your identity is shaken.
The version of you who planned a future with someone else? Gone.

Suddenly you’re Googling what do I do with my life now at midnight and buying self-help books with aggressive titles like Unfck Yourself*.

Being lost is terrifying.

But it’s also sacred.

Because when you don’t know who you are anymore, you get to find out.

You get to ask questions like:

  • What do I actually want?

  • What lights me up now?

  • Who am I when no one else gets a vote?

You’re allowed to outgrow the woman who held everything together.
You’re allowed to mourn the life you planned — even if parts of it were never truly yours.

This isn’t failure.

It’s freedom wearing grief’s clothes.

L #3: Low-Key Livid

Ah yes. The quiet rage.

Not the screaming kind — the simmering kind.

It shows up when:

  • Your ex moves on suspiciously fast

  • Your kids describe his new life like it’s a sitcom

  • He suddenly discovers hobbies he mocked when you were married

And then there’s the rage scroll.

Seeing him live a polished version of the life you begged him to participate in.

That anger isn’t crazy.

It’s clarity.

Anger says:

  • Something was violated

  • This mattered

  • I deserved more

Anger isn’t shameful.
It’s a boundary being born.

Let it speak — but don’t let it drive.

When All Three L’s Hit at Once

Some days it’s not one L.

It’s all of them.

You wake up lonely.
Spend the day lost.
And fall asleep livid at the world for not seeing how much you’re carrying.

On those days, don’t fix it.

Pause.

Say out loud:
“This is hard — and I’m doing it anyway.”

You don’t have to be graceful in your grief.
You just have to be honest in it.

Your Feelings Aren’t the Problem — They’re the Portal

Lonely. Lost. Livid.

These aren’t flaws.
They’re signals.

They’re showing you what needs care, not judgment.

You’re not weak.
You’re not broken.
You’re healing.

And that is holy work.

If this blog felt like someone finally put words to what you’ve been carrying, you’re not alone.

Chapter Three of my book goes deeper into these emotions — the lonely, the lost, and the low-key livid moments we don’t always say out loud. Not to fix them. Not to rush you. But to help you understand what your heart is actually asking for.

This book isn’t a checklist or a quick “move on” plan.
It’s a companion for the days when healing feels quiet, complicated, and very human.

If you’re ready to keep reading — gently, in your own time — the book is waiting for you.

Until next time—dare to begin.
